Have you ever stopped to think about how we depend on nature in our daily lives? It is from it that the air we breathe, the water we drink and use for our hygiene, the grains, fruits and vegetables that feed us… Our survival, therefore, depends on sustainability actions aimed at preserving the Environment.
But how can we do our part? What attitudes can we have to preserve rivers, oceans, fauna and flora? What habits can we adopt in our routine? In this text we are going to talk about the 3Rs of Sustainability and how to put them into practice.
WHAT ARE THE 3 R’S OF SUSTAINABILITY?
The 3 R’s are practices aimed at reducing the environmental impact caused by the unbridled consumption of natural resources and the excessive production of waste. The three letters correspond to the words Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Reduce
What can you do in your daily life to reduce the use of natural resources and generate less waste? The tip is to take quicker showers, turn off the faucet when washing dishes or brushing your teeth and wash the car with just a bucket of water. And how about adopting an ecological cup, a mug or a squeezer at work? This helps to reduce the amount of disposable cups used daily.
Another action is to use the car less on a daily basis to reduce fossil fuel consumption and the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. You can walk further or adopt the bicycle for short distances.
And how about also adopting a more conscious consumption when it comes to clothes and shoes? It is important to remember that the textile industry uses trillions of liters of water annually to produce these items.
Reuse
One of the main environmental problems is the huge amount of garbage produced every day. To give you an idea, Brazil alone generates around 80 million tons of solid waste every year, according to the Brazilian Association of Public Cleaning and Special Waste Companies (Abrelpe).
How can we decrease this number? One solution is to give another use to items that would otherwise go to waste. Cardboard boxes, pet bottles and glass can be turned into organizers, stuff holders, flower vases and lampshades. Several tutorials on the internet teach how to reuse these and other items. Just let your imagination flow!
Recycle
What if it is not possible to reuse items such as paper, plastic, tires and aluminum cans? What to do? The alternative is to recycle them. During recycling, they will undergo physical and chemical processes, transform into raw material and give rise to other products.
Before that, however, everyone needs to do their part at home and at work. It is essential to separate dry garbage (cardboard, pet bottles, plastic, paper, soda cans, newspaper, styrofoam, glass jars, etc.)
THE 3 R’S OF SUSTAINABILITY AT CATTEGRAN
Here at Cattegran we also develop several sustainability actions to do our part for the preservation of the Environment. This care even earned us a Renewable Energy Certificate. In 2020, we used electricity from renewable energy sources and avoided the emission of 75 tons of CO2 in the ozone layer, which is equivalent to planting 10 trees in nature.
And speaking of planting trees, for over 10 years we have carried out an important Environmental Education project with schools in the north of Espírito Santo, where Cattegran is located. Every year we distribute more than four thousand seedlings of native plants, such as jatobá, pau-brasil, jequitibá rosa, ipe yellow and jacaranda.
In addition, we present our employees with a personalized squeezer. The objective was to reduce the use of disposable cups at our administrative headquarters in Colatina.
When it comes to reuse, we also do our part. For about four years, we have stored all the water we use in our deposit. The intention is to reuse it in procedures such as drilling granite, cutting with diamond wire and washing blocks, in addition to cleaning machines and equipment.
